Purpose: Define the architectural principles that every Pancakes application should preserve, regardless of domain, implementation, or deployment.

Although these applications differ in purpose, they should all exhibit a common architectural philosophy.
This document defines the design invariants that should remain true throughout the ecosystem.
Unlike implementation guidance or coding standards, design invariants are intended to be durable.
They describe the qualities that should remain recognizable regardless of technology, programming language, deployment model, or application domain.
Every project should be able to explain how it satisfies these invariants, or why a deliberate exception has been made.

Each layer answers a different question.
The Human Flourishing Framework explains what the ecosystem seeks to cultivate.
The Ethics Framework determines whether a project should exist and under what conditions.
Design Invariants explain how ethically acceptable projects should be designed.
Standards and safety cases then describe how those designs are implemented and justified.
Every Pancakes application should support human flourishing while preserving human dignity, agency, and stewardship.
This commitment should remain true not only under ideal conditions, but also when users experience adversity, uncertainty, or institutional failure.
Applications should therefore be evaluated according to a simple question:
Does this application increase people’s ability to flourish, especially when circumstances become difficult?
This question takes precedence over traditional software success metrics such as engagement, growth, retention, monetization, or optimization.
Every application should strengthen people’s ability to live meaningful, capable, connected, and self-directed lives.

Applications should therefore reveal complexity progressively rather than forcing users to migrate to entirely different systems as their lives become more sophisticated.
The underlying operational model should remain consistent while interfaces, workflows, and capabilities evolve alongside the user.
Growth should expand possibilities rather than replace accumulated knowledge.

Automation should assist rather than replace judgment.
