This playlist begins after those questions.
Rather than asking what is broken, it asks what those institutions are supposed to make possible.
The songs come from different countries, languages, traditions, and decades. They are not gathered to represent the world geographically. They are gathered because they illuminate different ways people inhabit it well.
Across these recordings we find quiet craftsmanship, dancing, travel, friendship, remembered places, enduring traditions, gentle mornings, and communities coming together in celebration. Some songs carry grief. Others radiate joy. Many simply remind us to notice the beauty that already surrounds us.
Pancakes imagines a civilization where ordinary people can live ordinary lives extraordinarily well. A good society should make room for musicians perfecting a groove, neighbors sharing songs, children learning traditions, friends lingering over conversations, and strangers discovering that delight needs no translation.
