Historically, a commonwealth refers to a political and social community organized around the common good and shared flourishing.
The word originally meant the common weal—the shared well-being of a community.

The Commonwealth:
Participation is voluntary.
Authority is distributed.
Stewardship is shared.
Technology serves the Commonwealth.
The Commonwealth does not exist to serve technology.
Human beings are social, embodied, and dependent creatures.
People flourish through:
No person can provide these conditions entirely alone.
At the same time, people and communities continually encounter technological, economic, environmental, and cultural change.
The Commonwealth exists to help people and communities remain capable of:
Its purpose is not to eliminate change.
Its purpose is to preserve the conditions under which change can be integrated into continuing lives of dignity and self-determination.
Computation increasingly participates in:

No institution possesses universal authority.
Authority is distributed.
Institutions cooperate through stewardship, constitutional commitments, and mutual recognition.
Persons are the fundamental participants of the Commonwealth.
The Commonwealth exists for people.
People do not exist for the Commonwealth.
Households are primary institutions of care, learning, hospitality, stewardship, and continuity.
They are meaningful centers of governance rather than merely collections of user accounts.
Nodes are self-governing institutions of the Commonwealth.
They provide locally governed homes for data, services, memory, coordination, and community participation.
The architecture and operation of nodes are defined elsewhere.
The Commonwealth recognizes their constitutional role without prescribing their implementation.
Projects are enduring expressions of the Commonwealth’s purpose.
Different projects cultivate different aspects of humane life computing.

Projects may evolve while remaining part of the larger Commonwealth.
People flourish through voluntary association.
Guilds, cooperatives, mutual-aid groups, educational organizations, and other associations provide intermediate institutions between households and the broader Commonwealth.
Federations coordinate concerns that exceed individual communities.

It does not replace local autonomy.

They do not own them.
Membership is voluntary.

It exists to help people, households, communities, institutions, and self-governing nodes cooperate without surrendering their dignity, autonomy, or capacity for self-governance.
Its purpose is neither optimization nor extraction.
Its purpose is to preserve and cultivate the social, institutional, material, and symbolic conditions under which people and future generations can continue to flourish together.
